Year after year, the FPSC examiners' reports say roughly the same thing: the majority of candidates who fail CSS fail because of English Essay. Many of them are intelligent, well-read people. They fail not because they cannot write, but because they make a predictable set of mistakes under exam pressure. Here are the twelve we see most often while reviewing practice essays.

Mistakes in topic selection and planning

1. Choosing the topic you know most facts about

Facts don't win essays; arguments do. Choose the topic on which you can build the clearest, most defensible thesis, even if you know fewer statistics about it.

2. Skipping the outline

The outline is not a formality. Examiners read it first and often form their impression of the essay from it. Spend 25–30 minutes on it. A strong outline shows a thesis, logically ordered arguments, and a counter-argument.

3. Not having a thesis statement

If the examiner can't tell what you are arguing by the end of your introduction, the essay is already in trouble. Your thesis should be one or two sentences that directly answer the question.

4. Misreading the topic

"Is democracy failing in Pakistan?" is not the same as "Democracy in Pakistan". The first asks you to take a position. Underline the key words in the topic and check every paragraph against them.

Mistakes in writing

5. Writing a long, wandering introduction

Two paragraphs of history before you reach your point is common and costly. Hook, context, thesis: that is all an introduction needs.

6. Using memorised quotations that don't fit

A quotation should support a specific argument, not decorate a paragraph. Three relevant quotations are better than twelve forced ones.

7. Using complicated vocabulary incorrectly

Examiners notice when a word has been pulled from a vocabulary list. Clear, correct English always beats ornate, incorrect English.

8. Paragraphs without topic sentences

Each body paragraph should open with a sentence that states its argument and links it back to the thesis. Then evidence, then analysis.

The examiner is not looking for a scholar. They are looking for an officer who can think clearly and argue a case on paper.

Mistakes in content and finishing

9. Ignoring the counter-argument

Acknowledging and rebutting the opposing view shows maturity. A single well-handled counter-argument paragraph can lift an average essay.

10. Turning the essay into a list of problems

Many essays on governance or the economy become long lists of problems with a short list of solutions at the end. Analyse causes and connect them to your thesis instead.

11. Running out of time

An unfinished essay almost always fails. Practise writing complete essays in three hours, including the outline, at least ten times before the exam.

12. Not proofreading

Leave ten minutes to read your essay. Fix subject–verb agreement, missing articles and spelling. These small errors add up quickly in the examiner's mind.

  • Write one full essay a week and get it checked by someone who will be honest.
  • Read quality editorials and note how they structure arguments.
  • Keep a notebook of arguments by theme: governance, economy, education, climate, foreign policy.
