Winning your first client is exciting. Then the money sits in your Upwork or Fiverr balance and you realise you don't know the best way to bring it home. PayPal still doesn't work for receiving payments in Pakistan, so freelancers rely on a handful of alternatives. Here is how they compare in practice.

Payoneer

Payoneer is the most widely used option among Pakistani freelancers, largely because Fiverr and Upwork both support it directly. You get receiving accounts in USD, GBP and EUR, which also lets you accept payments from direct clients.

  • Withdrawals to a Pakistani bank account typically arrive within 1–2 working days.
  • There is a currency conversion margin when you withdraw to PKR, so check the rate shown before confirming.
  • An annual account fee applies if you receive below a certain amount in a year.
  • Verification can take a few days; make sure your name exactly matches your CNIC.

Wise

Wise is popular with freelancers who work with direct clients abroad. It is known for transparent fees and conversion rates close to the mid-market rate. Availability of features for Pakistani residents has changed over time, so check the current status in the app before relying on it as your main method.

Direct bank transfer

Upwork allows direct withdrawal to a Pakistani bank account. It's simple and the money arrives in PKR, but intermediary bank fees can apply and transfers sometimes take several working days. Some banks also offer dedicated freelancer accounts that allow you to retain a portion of your earnings in foreign currency.

The best method is the one whose fees you understand. Do the maths on a real withdrawal before you decide.

Taxes and documentation

Foreign remittances for IT and IT-enabled services enjoy a reduced tax regime in Pakistan, but you need to be a filer and keep records to benefit. Register on the FBR's IRIS portal, keep your invoices, and ask your bank for proceeds realisation certificates (PRCs) for your remittances. Being on the Active Taxpayer List also reduces withholding tax on many transactions.

Get registered with PSEB

Freelancers can register with the Pakistan Software Export Board as individual IT professionals. Registration can help with documentation and some banking benefits.

Our practical setup

  • Use Payoneer as your main receiving account for platforms.
  • Keep a second method active as a backup in case of account reviews.
  • Open a freelancer-friendly bank account and keep remittance records.
  • Never withdraw to someone else's account, and never 'rent' an account from a friend.
  • Withdraw in larger, less frequent amounts if your method charges a fixed fee per withdrawal.

Fees and rules change, so revisit your setup every six months. A few minutes of comparison can save you a meaningful amount over a year of client work.
